Brazil: Asterix Wholesale Prices Drop Up to 29% in a Week While Agata Firms

Brazilian potato buyers saw two opposite price moves in one week: red-skinned Asterix got much cheaper while white-skinned Agata became dearer. Between 18 and 24 September a 25-kilogram sack of Asterix in Belo Horizonte went from 110 to 85 reais, and in Rio from 105 to 75 reais. Agata in Belo Horizonte climbed from about 66 to 74 reais. At packing level the spread between regions is large, with Bahia highlands paying 100 reais for top Agata and the Triângulo Mineiro only 50. Growers holding Asterix, packers choosing where to source and supermarket buyers planning promotions all need these signals. Shoppers have not yet felt relief, since the mid-month inflation preview still showed potatoes up 7.32 percent in greater Belo Horizonte. The caveat is that the retail figures cover a period that ends before the latest wholesale fall, and the regional retail number comes from a single newspaper report.
Potato prices in Brazilian wholesale markets split by variety in the week to 24 September. Asterix, a red-skinned variety, fell sharply. Agata, the main white-skinned table variety, moved higher. The data come from the CEPEA price series published on HF Brasil. All prices are per 25-kg sack.
In Belo Horizonte, Asterix special grade fell from R$110.00 on 18 September to R$85.00 on 24 September. That is a drop of about 22.7%. In Rio de Janeiro, Asterix fell from R$105.00 to R$75.00, or about 28.6%. In São Paulo, the decline was smaller, from R$93.33 to R$86.00.
Agata special grade went the other way. In Belo Horizonte it rose from R$66.36 to R$74.00. In São Paulo it rose from R$78.33 to R$82.50. In Rio de Janeiro it reached R$86.00, above the local Asterix price.

Wide gaps between growing regions
Prices paid at packing level also varied widely on 24 September. Agata special grade was worth R$100.00 in Chapada Diamantina in Bahia. It fetched R$73.33 in the Brasília region and in Vargem Grande do Sul. In the Triângulo Mineiro and Alto Paranaíba region it fetched only R$50.00. Lower-grade Agata sold for R$25.00 to R$50.00 depending on the region.
CEPEA reported earlier that drier weather in mid-September allowed faster harvesting and more supply. That pressure now shows most clearly in Asterix.
Consumers still pay more
Retail data tell a different story. According to the newspaper O Tempo, potato prices in the Belo Horizonte metropolitan region rose 7.32% in the September IPCA-15 preview of inflation. Retail prices usually follow wholesale prices with a delay.

The split between Asterix and Agata shows that supply is not uniform. Growers with Asterix now face a faster price correction than growers with Agata. The large gap between Bahia and Minas Gerais also shows how quality and location shape returns. If wholesale prices keep falling, retail inflation for potatoes should ease in the coming weeks.

If drier weather continues in the Southeast, harvest and supply should keep rising. Retail potato inflation should reflect the wholesale correction in the October readings of IPCA-15 and IPCA.
